Short course on Ethics and Health Research A short course entitled “Ethics and Health Research in
Developing Countries” was successfully held at the Headquarter of Vietnam
Commission for Population, Family and Children (VCPFC), Hanoi from 12 – 16
April 2004. So far, very few Dr. George Ulrich, Academic Coordinator of the Master's programme & Secretary General of the Inter-University Centre in Venice, Italy was the main teacher of the course. Co-teacher was Dr. Judith Paula Asher. There were nearly 30 participants from affiliated institutes, universities and from Nghe An province. Many of the participants had previously studied public health overseas. Dr. Tine Gammeltoft and Dr. Vibeke Rasch, University of Copenhagen, participated in the course as resource persons. During the course, all participants were very actively engaged in the topics at issue. This suggests that research ethics is a theme that attracts researchers’ attention in Vietnam at present, within and beyond the field of medicine. With his straightforward teaching methods, Dr. Ulrich introduced participants to current standards of international medical ethics and research ethics. Through group discussions, participants examined and analyzed ethical considerations pertaining to health-related ENRECA projects in Vietnam and developed an ethical strategy paper for these projects. A total of 21 participants who attended over 80% of class time received certification for their participation in the course. |
