Short course on researching children

 LETTER OF INVITATION TO THE RESEARCH TRAINING COURSE:

 “RESEARCHING CHILDREN – NEW THEORETICAL APPROACHES

AND RESEARCH METHODS”

 This is to inform you of the upcoming training course “Researching Children: New Theoretical Approaches and Research Methods” (see attached course plan for details). Instructors are Professor Karen Fog Olwig and Associate Professor Tine Gammeltoft of University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The course is a planned activity in 2004 of the ENRECA project REACHStrengthening Population and Reproductive Health Research in Vietnam” funded by Danida. 

Brief course description

In recent years, the social sciences have developed a strong research interest in children that seeks to investigate and understand children’s position in society as human beings in their own right. This course offers an introduction to this new research field in order to show how it generates new knowledge about children that may be useful to professionals who work with children in varying capacities. The course has two parts: 1) a theoretical part that offers a survey of the new research field, and 2) a more practical, methodological part, where participants design and complete a small research project that focuses on various aspects of children in society.

Course plan:

Core course:

·        November 8 – 13, 2004: Theoretical and Methodological Approaches to the study of Children and Youth.

Optional course:

·        November 14 – December 29, 2004: Research projects

·        December 30 – 31, 2004: Workshop I – Presentation of Collected Data and Tentative Answers to the Research Questions

·        January 13 – 14, 2005: Workshop II – Presentation of Papers

Workshop at Vinh City, Nghe An province

 A workshop was held at Vinh City on June 25, 2004 by co-operation of Central and Nghe An provincial Project Management Unit and the Committee for Population, Family & Children of Nghe An. Purposes of the workshop were to launch the publication of the project – a book titled “An introduction to Social Anthropology in a Vietnamese Context” and to discuss activity plan for next time. Participating the workshop there were nearly 60 peoples who stood for related agencies at provincial level, Quynh Luu district and Quynh Xuan, Quynh Bang communes. Associate Professor, Doctor Tine Gammeltoft,University of Copenhagen and project’s researchers participated the workshop.

 Presentations at the workshop reviewed project’s activities that were carried out in Quynh Luu so far. During two years 2002 – 2003, many research groups were sent to Quynh Bang and Quynh Xuan communes to collect data. Thanks to effective helps of local authorities and people, the groups had collected very much interesting data. A part of these data was exploited to write a book titles “An introduction to  Social Antropology in a Vietnamese context”, which was published in English and Vietnamese and other parts of the data are being processed and will be announced soon.
